The Ford 8.8 rear end width measures 59 and 11/44 inches. The Ford 8.8 is a type of automotive axle made by Ford Motor Company at the Sterling Axle Plant in Sterling Heights, Michigan. Initially featured in 1983 Ford trucks, this axle was created to take over from the Ford 9-inch axle. Today, it is still being produced for various Ford vehicles, including the Ford Ranger and Ford F-Series. It has also been utilized in Ford SUVs until the shift to independent suspension replacing the solid axle. Features such as the ring, pinion, and carrier remained consistent between the solid axle and the independent rear suspension. The Ford 8.8 axle was commonly found in V8-powered Mustangs from 1986 until the 2014 model year, as well as in all Mustang models from 2011 to 2014.
The Ford Mustang comes with varying sizes of rear axles: 79-93 models have a rear axle that is 57 inches wide, 94-98 models have a rear axle that is 58.5 inches wide, and 99 and newer models have a rear axle that is 59 7/8 inches wide.
