Some 2014 Kia Rio owners have experienced problems with the catalytic converter getting blocked. This issue typically occurs when the internal plates of the converter become fused together, resulting in a loss of power in your vehicle and requiring it to be towed for repairs. In severe cases, it can lead to additional damage such as gasket failure or the melting of plastic components. If the blockage is only partial, you may still be able to drive the car, but be on the lookout for signs like reduced acceleration, dark exhaust, a sulfuric smell, a slow engine, or excessive heat under the vehicle. If a full replacement of the part is necessary, expect a cost between $1,100 and $1,170.
My Kia Rio is now on its second upstream catalytic converter, and although it doesn't burn oil, I do notice black smoke coming out. The car has clocked 115,000 miles.
