Honda is recalling 350,083 of its 2016 Civics due to a potential issue with the electric parking brake. The problem arises when the brake fails to engage after the engine is shut off, posing a risk of the vehicle rolling away and causing an accident. This recall affects Civics equipped with either the 1.5-liter turbo or 2-liter engines. Despite the large number of vehicles impacted, Honda reports that no accidents have been linked to this problem. The identification of the issue was made through an analysis of warranty claims, with 342 reported cases of the problem occurring. The fix for this defect involves a software update.
In the 2016 versions of the Honda Civic, the problem with the parking brake was apparently fixed by updating the software in the vehicle stability assist electronic control unit. After the software update was done, the electronic parking brake would automatically engage when the car was in park, just before the driver exited the vehicle.
