The Dodge Ram 1500's 8-speed transmission is often praised for its smooth performance, and it shares the ZH 8HP transmission with various high-end car brands like BMW, Rolls Royce, Land Rover, Jaguar, Audi, and Maserati. Manufactured by ZF in Germany, this transmission is popular overseas but not as widely used in the United States. While there may be an occasional "2-1 clunk in downshift" issue due to programming, this can usually be addressed by contacting your dealer. Like with any transmission, there are common problems such as noisy rattling from a slip fit hub and turbine spline shafts within the torque converter. Occasionally, the engine may initially rev at high RPMs before settling into its top gear and locking up, but these issues are typically minor.

I recently had the THIRD 8-speed transmission installed in my 2014 Ram 1500. These transmissions typically last up to 180,000 miles. The first one lasted exactly that long, the second one had 76,000 miles on it when I got it, and I added another 100,000 miles before it needed to be replaced. Both transmissions began with a slight hiccup during acceleration, which eventually escalated to multiple hiccups, chattering, hesitations when shifting gears, and jerking when starting from a stop over a period of around 10,000 miles each.

The transmission issues with the 2019 Dodge Ram 1500 involve gear slippage and delayed shifting.
