Mercedes Benz engines have a reputation for being particular about the type of gasoline they need, and the CLA 250 is no different. It specifically requires premium 91 unleaded gasoline at a minimum. The advanced engineering in Mercedes vehicles necessitates the use of higher octane fuel to function properly, even though it may be more expensive each time you fill up at the gas station. While using a fuel octane that is too high will just waste your money, using one that is too low can result in costly repairs. The first sign of a problem if you use 87 or 89 octane gas is engine knocking, which can potentially lead to severe damage. If the risk of engine damage isn't enough to convince you to use premium fuel, the high cost of repairs certainly will be, as getting an engine rebuilt for the CLA 250 is a costly endeavor.
