The 2003 Ford Focus offered two engine choices, either the 2.0L 4-cylinder or the slightly larger 2.3L 4-cylinder. Fortunately, both engines require the same type and volume of oil. Whether you have the 2.0L or 2.3L engine, it is recommended to use 4.5 quarts of SAE 5W-20 full synthetic motor oil. In emergencies, you could use SAE 5W-30, but it's not advised, especially for extended periods. This caution is due to the viscosity of the oil. A higher number indicates thicker oil, which can increase friction in your engine. Over time, this extra strain can lead to decreased efficiency and potential premature engine failure.
You'll need 4 quarts of 5W-20 oil for the 2-liter engine, and 4.5 quarts for the 2.3-liter engine when doing an oil change. Don't forget to also change the filter.
