Some extreme cases of rust issues were found on certain Mazda CX3 models, with rust-holes large enough to almost fit an arm through. Mazda officially recognized this problem with the CX3 in late 2016. In some instances, rust can occur on the liftgate near the rear mount camera and/or liftgate opener switch. To address this, Mazda implemented a fix by installing a pad on the liftgate opener switch mount base to prevent direct contact with the paint and changing the shape of the rear mount camera base to avoid interference with the paint. When customers reported rust problems, Mazda would repaint the affected areas and apply a protective film.
The wheel compartments and rear hatch sections are the most prone to rust issues.
The Mazda CX 3 is known for its tendency to rust, particularly in areas with cold weather and road salt exposure.
