The neutral safety switch in a car's transmission is situated on the side of the transmission housing. Its purpose is to confirm if your vehicle is in either park or neutral, as these are the only safe conditions for starting the engine. Starting the engine while the car is in gear could harm the transmission by activating the starter motor. This is why the neutral safety switch permits the starter to operate only when the car is in park or neutral. If you find that the switch is malfunctioning, you may need to shift to neutral instead of park to start the car. If you detect signs of the switch failing, such as this, I suggest replacing it promptly.
