In the 2002 Mazda Protege, you should replace the cabin air filter annually or after driving 20,000 miles, whichever comes first. This filter is located behind the glovebox on the passenger side. To access it, open the glovebox and gently squeeze the sides to release the tabs. Pull the glovebox towards you to remove it completely and uncover the air filter housing. Take off the plastic cover without needing any tools and slide out the old filter. Note its position and insert the new filter in the same way. Replace the cover and reposition the glovebox.
