The 2001 Ford F-150 4.6 L has its coolant temperature sensor located near the thermostat housing and cylinder head. This sensor, also called an ECT sensor, is responsible for gauging the temperature of the coolant in the cooling system to monitor the engine's heat output. When the coolant temperature sensor malfunctions, it can give inaccurate readings to the computer, leading to incorrect fuel and timing calculations. It's not rare for this sensor to fail and provide a consistently cold reading to the computer. Signs of a faulty coolant temperature sensor include decreased fuel efficiency and the emission of black smoke from the exhaust of the vehicle.
