In the 2009 Dodge Ram 1500, the Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) valve is positioned on the intake manifold. Its function is to divert some of the combustion gases back into the combustion chamber to lower the temperature. Typically, it is operated electronically. If your EGR valve malfunctions, you can usually drive your car to the repair shop, unless the issue is severe enough to cause a rattling noise in the engine – in that case, it's better to have your vehicle towed. Replacing the EGR valve is not a common repair and can cost you between $220 to $250, depending on where you have it done.
