If the fuel pump in your 2005 Mazda3 is starting to fail or working on and off, one of the first things you should investigate is the fuel pump relay. This component is not only more cost-effective to replace, but it's typically the initial part to malfunction. It's more common to have a faulty fuel pump relay than a faulty fuel pump, which can save you time and money on diagnostics. To find the fuel pump relay, you'll need to locate the fuse and relay box in the engine compartment. This box is situated on the far right side under the hood, to the right of the air intake. The fuel pump relay is labeled R6 – it's typically the light blue relay near the bottom left of the fuse panel if you don't have a diagram available.
