The 2000 Lexus ES300 has a relay in the main fuse box in the engine compartment called the EFI fuse that controls the fuel pump. The fuel pump, located in the left rear of the trunk, is powered by this EFI fuse and is controlled by a computer. A malfunctioning fuel pump relay can cause the engine to stop running because the fuel supply is affected. Signs of a faulty fuel pump relay include power loss, difficulty starting the engine, absence of the usual pump noise, and a risk of the vehicle catching fire. If the fuel pump relay malfunctions while the vehicle is in operation, it will shut off power to the fuel pump, leading to engine stalling. In some cases, a faulty relay might allow the vehicle to be restarted shortly after, but a completely failed relay will not permit the engine to restart.
