The 2001 Toyota Avalon has two knock sensors – one on bank 1 and the other on bank 2, situated in the "V" between the two cylinder banks. To reach them, the intake manifold must be removed. If you suspect any issues, start by testing the wiring, as replacing the harness could be a cost-effective alternative to replacing the sensor. Although the repair is not overly complex, taking out the intake manifold can be time-consuming and poses a risk of accidental damage. If you lack experience or confidence, it is advisable to entrust the task to a professional mechanic, even if it means spending a little more.
