In a 2005 Chevy Equinox, the knock sensor is positioned near the top of the engine, right above the oil filter. Acting like a microphone, the knock sensor listens for any unusual knocking or pinging sounds while the engine is running. If it detects such noises, it sends a signal to the computer, prompting adjustments to the engine's performance. The computer can tweak the air and fuel mixture to run a bit richer or leaner in an effort to address the issue. To access the sensor for removal, you will have to disconnect the electrical connector and loosen the bolt. Additional tools might also be necessary to dismantle other components obstructing access to the sensor.
