The purge valve, also called the EVAP canister, can be found at the rear of the muffler on the 2006 Hyundai Sonata. This canister contains about 1 to 2 pounds of activated charcoal that works by absorbing fuel vapors and holding them until the purge valve opens. When the valve opens, the engine's suction pulls the stored fuel vapors from the charcoal into the engine intake manifold. If the EVAP canister purge valve is failing, it can lead to rough idling and poor engine performance. The engine might seem weak and struggle to provide enough power for acceleration, making it feel like you're pressing the gas pedal but moving slowly.
