Its main function is to release excess pressure from the fuel system. High pressure from vapors in the lines can lead to engine performance issues. If there's an issue with the EVAP purge valve, your car's check engine light will likely come on, signaling a problem with the EVAP system. You may also notice decreased engine performance.
