To find the speed sensor in a 2001 Mitsubishi Galant, you should look beside the transmission input sensor on the right side of the engine. The vehicle speed sensor (VSS) monitors the speed of the transmission output or wheels. The engine control module (ECM) uses this data to adjust various engine functions like ignition timing, fuel mixture, transmission shifting points, and diagnostic procedures. It's crucial to have a functioning speed sensor because without it, the PCM won't be able to effectively regulate gear shifting in the transmission. This could lead to rough shifting or quicker-than-normal gear changes.
