In the 2009 Chevrolet Cobalt, the starter is located on the driver's side of the engine block, underneath the intake manifold, near the firewall. Its purpose is to crank the engine when the key is turned in order to start the vehicle; without it, the car would not be able to start. To replace the starter, you will need tools such as a floor jack or other jack, jack stands or wood supports, an 8mm deepwell socket, a 13mm socket (1/4" drive), a 15mm socket, a 3/8 or 1/2" ratchet, and 3 and 6" extension bars. Warning signs of a failing starter include a clicking noise when attempting to start the car, failure to start, the engine not cranking, smoke coming from the car, or the starter being soaked in oil. The cost of a new starter typically ranges from $50 to $70, depending on where you purchase it.
