The recommended coolant for the 2005 Ford Escape is FordGold mixed with a 50/50 ratio of distilled water. This coolant serves to prevent rust buildup and lower the freezing point within the vehicle's cooling system, rather than directly cooling the engine. Variations in coolant formulations are necessary due to the different metals used in engine blocks, requiring specific chemicals to prevent rust on each type of metal. Ford Motorcraft or FordGold is the preferred coolant recommended by Ford, identifiable by its green or yellow color. This extended-life coolant is designed to last up to 100,000 miles.
In 2002, a standard green 3-year coolant was used. Then, in 2003, there was a switch from the green coolant to "Ford Gold" 5-year coolant around the middle of the year.
