This review is for the SERVICE department. I purchased my car from Carmax in Summer 2012. I bought the extended warranty. About a month ago I noticed my all wheel drive light turned on and off, randomly. I made an appointment to have them look at it. They advised there would be a $50 diagnosis fee and that repairs should be covered by warranty. Carmax service person told me he would call me by 1:30 that day to advise of the status. At 2:30 I had not heard from him I called. He told me that I needed a part for the all wheel drive light, that the battery was bad, I needed a new serpentine belt and that they would need to diagnose the steering wheel for a squeeky noise. I rented a car. Service person told me he would call me the next day by 9:30am. He didn't call. I called him and he quoted me about $400 for the repairs. I suggested that since I just bought my car I was surprised that it had a bad battery. I agreed to pay the $400 for the repairs. I was told that the part for the AW drive light would take 4 days to receive, but that in t he meantime the other things would get fixed. Had the other things been fixed on the first day, I could have had the car and brought it back when the AWD part was is. I called Carmax to find out if the part for the AWD had arrived They said that one of the employees had gone to a dealership to get the part, but had forgotten!! So back he went apparently to get the part. The few times I tried to call, by the way, I was unable to get through. When I finally did get through, I was always told the tech was unavailable and would call back. He never did. On the day I was scheduled to pick up the car, he told me he would call by 4pm. At 5:30 I had not heard, so I went to Carmax to pick up the car. I was told that the battery and steering wheel were fixed THAT day, meaning that the car sat on the lot for 7 days without being touched!!! So the car was there for a week, I paid for a rental car and they did nothing for the entire week!! While it was being finished, I spoke to the Manager who assured me that this is not how they run their business and they would take care of my fees. I felt a renewed hope that Carmax service would come through. The following day I went to get into the car and found that the driver's side handle on the outside was loose and I was unable to open the car door. I climbed over from the other side, drove back to Carmax wondering why my door was now broken (coincidence?). I drove back to Carmax, they took the car and gave me a loaner. I was able to pick up my car that same evening. I was told a wire was loose, caused by the cold, and that it was fixed. About a week later, another cold day, trying to get back into my car on the drivers side (imagine my nerve), I found the same problem! I climbed in from the other side again. Drove my car to Carmax, and noticed a slight noise coming from my heater if I turned it up high. I mentioned this to the service tech when I dropped my car off. He assured me that it was cold and no diagnosis was needed. A different person called me the next day to tell me that they needed to order a part for the door and that it would be available in two days. I mentioned to the technician that I would like a quote for the rear wiper since I was already there and he told me he would get me a price. Two days later they called to say the car door was fixed. Never did hear about the wiper and what it would cost to repair. I picked up the car after the service center was closed, got into the vehicle finally! Turned on the heater and discovered I now had a helicopter propeller in my car. At least the sound of one. So now the car has to go back-but not to Carmax! I have now looked into other warranty options and decided to go to a different dealership, even if it costs a little more. Honestly, don't do it. Go anywhere else.
