Dodge VIN Check: What is a Dodge VIN?

Dodge Brothers started as an auto parts manufacturer before building their first complete car in 1914. Chrysler bought the company in 1928, placing it between their Chrysler and Plymouth divisions. While Dodge was a major player in the muscle car era, the brand's biggest impact came in 1984. That year saw the release of the Caravan, the first minivan. The brand regained its performance credentials in 1992 with the release of the Viper, a V10-powered sports car that could go toe-to-toe with the world's best super cars. In 2011, Dodge's trucks were spun off to form the RAM division. Today, Dodge is best known for their retro Hemi-powered Charger and Challenger muscle cars.

Whether you're looking for a family hauler or your dream car, EpicVIN can help you pick your next vehicle. We have the VIN decoder Dodge buyers depend on for accurate factory information. This tool can decode this factory-issued ID, telling you exactly how the vehicle was configured. If you want to reduce your risk of buying a lemon, order a VIN report. This collects information from government and corporate databases, giving you insight into the vehicle's history.

Since 1981, all automakers operating in the U.S. have been required to issue a standardized Vehicle Identification Number on their vehicles. The VIN uses 17 digits that describe where the vehicle was built, and includes information about the model, engine and equipment. If you're shopping for a new vehicle, you can use our Dodge VIN number lookup to decode this information. This is useful for seeing if factory data matches the seller's description.

Our Dodge VIN decoder is just one of the services we offer. We've built our search tools to work with a range of vehicles and brands, so you can use our site to run a heavy duty truck, ATV or motorcycle VIN check. We also offer license plate lookup, which references public databases to find the VIN number connected to the plate. From there, you can get the same results as a Dodge VIN check.

Dodge VIN Number Lookup

What do you get when you use our Dodge VIN lookup? This code is issued at the factory, and placed on the vehicle in areas that are unlikely to be replaced or modified. This creates a permanent record of its build history. Our decoder tells you exactly what each character means, so you know how the car was originally equipped. This is useful for verifying seller information, especially for unique models, like the high performance versions of the Dodge Viper.

Once you've narrowed down your choices, get some peace of mind by ordering a VIN report. Our site goes through vehicle records from insurance companies and government agencies, building a history of the vehicle. This includes vehicle owner lookup, insurance claims, accident reports, theft reports, and title changes. This information can help you avoid cars with hidden damage, and vehicles that have legal issues that make them hard to tag.

Where to Search for the VIN?

Where do you get the VIN for a DMV VIN check? Since this number is unique to the vehicle, it's printed on most official documents, including titles, insurance policies, registrations, inspections and some service receipts. It's also printed or stamped on several locations on the car itself. Here are the most common places you'll find the VIN on a Dodge:

  • Look through the windshield at the dashboard. Next to the driver's side A pillar, you should see a small metal plate with the VIN stamped into it. This plate is recessed on many of Dodge's trucks, so you may need a flashlight to read it.
  • Open the driver's door and look at the B pillar, just below the door latch. You should see a white sticker with information on the vehicle. The VIN is above and to the left of a bar code.
  • Look under the front passenger's seat. You should see a small flap of carpet between the seat rails. Lift up this flap, and you'll see the VIN stamped into the floor pan.
  • Look under the hood. Older Dodge trucks often have a metal tag with the VIN attached to the radiator support. Some vehicles also have a plate or sticker on one of the strut towers.

Frequently Asked Questions

Locations vary from manufacturer to manufacturer. However, there are three places you can find the code on most vehicles:

- Look through the windshield at the dashboard. On the driver’s side, you should see a small metal plate with the number stamped into it.
- Open the driver’s door. Look at the front and side of the door pillar for an I.D. sticker. It usually has the manufacturer’s logo on it. The code should be on this sticker.
- Open the hood. You may see a sticker on the firewall or near the passenger’s side strut tower. Some cars have the number engraved in one of these areas.

Since this number is used to identify the vehicle on official documents, you can also find it on the title, the window sticker, and on insurance policies.

We also decode numbers for RVs, heavy-duty trucks and motorcycles. If you need to decode an RV number, make sure it’s the one issued by the chassis manufacturer, not the RV outfitter.

No. Canadian and Mexican cars usually use the same format. Other countries use their own formats.

It’s up to the manufacturer to determine what they want to include for some parts of the number. For example, some companies don’t include information about transmissions or trim levels.

Usually, no. A few manufacturers stamp the code into the engine. If the VINs on the engine and car match, then it’s the original engine. On most vehicles, there isn’t anything that ties an engine to a specific vehicle. At most, looking up the vehicle on our website will tell you if a different type of engine was installed. For example, if someone swaps a V8 into a Ford Mustang, our site will tell you it originally came with a V6.
