Looking for the VIN?
Here is there you’ll find it:
Founded in 1903, Harley-Davidson is a global motorcycle brand. It survived the Great Depression, economic upheavals and many ownership changes to become one of the world's most famous names. Despite all these hurdles, Harley-Davidson has built a reputation as an industry leader with products that are recognised around the world.
Harley-Davidson is known for its chopper motorcycle style. In the beginning, it marketed heavyweight bikes with engine displacements of more than 700cc. However, it has expanded its product line to include middle-weight Street bikes and the Current VRSC (Very Restricted Sport Bike), which arrived in 2015 and 2002 respectively.
Harley-Davidson motorcycles are built in factories around the world. The company's largest factory is located in York, Pennsylvania; other locations include Bawal, India; and Manaus, Brazil. The company has also announced plans to build a new plant in Thailand. Harley-Davidson's motorcycles are sold worldwide.
The VIN code of the motorcycle can tell you as much information as the DNA of a human being. The Harley VIN decoder makes it easy to find out technical specs about the body of the bike, engine type and equipment that comes with it. However, the codes change from time to time.
The various Harley-Davidson bikes can be broken down into three groups based on their manufacture date and how the VIN codes are interpreted:
Harley-Davidson VIN decoder is the best way to learn about your motorcycle's original equipment, whether you're shopping for a Harley-Davidson or another brand. When you know how the vehicle was built, you can find the exact model you want. Don't have the number? We also offer license plate lookup, which finds the VIN in government records, so we can give you the same information.
When buying a car, one of the first things you'll do is order a vehicle history report (VIN). This is an official NMVTIS source that provides a detailed look at the car's history and legal status. By knowing about these issues up front, you can make sure that your next car purchase is a safe one.
Harley-Davidson motorcycle frame VIN numbers and VIN plate/stickers are often located on the front frame tubes, which are located in line with the forks.
Occasionally, they are located at the top of the handlebar and can be seen by turning the handlebars to the left or right.
The VIN number is usually stamped with a star * at each end.
The VIN stickers, which are tamper-proof, are typically black with white lettering and display a Harley-Davidson engine number. The numbers are usually in a dot matrix format.
Harley-Davidson's motorcycles have been evolving over the years. In 2010, the company introduced a new generation of bikes with 17-digit Vehicle Identification Numbers (VINs). The full VIN was stamped on the neck of the frame, and an abbreviated version of this code was stamped on the engine just like previous models.
An example of this code would look like this: 1HD1DJV131Y123456

Due to the VIN check, you can get the history report of your Harley-Davidson vehicle. It conveys all the important information about your bike, including accident history and engine type and year manufactured. At any time that you want to buy a new or second-hand Harley-Davidson vehicle, always use a VIN decoder before signing papers. Here are some example numbers:
Locations vary from manufacturer to manufacturer. However, there are three places you can find the code on most vehicles:
- Look through the windshield at the dashboard. On the driver’s side, you should see a small metal plate with the number stamped into it.
- Open the driver’s door. Look at the front and side of the door pillar for an I.D. sticker. It usually has the manufacturer’s logo on it. The code should be on this sticker.
- Open the hood. You may see a sticker on the firewall or near the passenger’s side strut tower. Some cars have the number engraved in one of these areas.
Since this number is used to identify the vehicle on official documents, you can also find it on the title, the window sticker, and on insurance policies.
We also decode numbers for RVs, heavy-duty trucks and motorcycles. If you need to decode an RV number, make sure it’s the one issued by the chassis manufacturer, not the RV outfitter.
No. Canadian and Mexican cars usually use the same format. Other countries use their own formats.
It’s up to the manufacturer to determine what they want to include for some parts of the number. For example, some companies don’t include information about transmissions or trim levels.
Usually, no. A few manufacturers stamp the code into the engine. If the VINs on the engine and car match, then it’s the original engine. On most vehicles, there isn’t anything that ties an engine to a specific vehicle. At most, looking up the vehicle on our website will tell you if a different type of engine was installed. For example, if someone swaps a V8 into a Ford Mustang, our site will tell you it originally came with a V6.
