While Ford SVT had once toyed with the idea of a high-performance Crown Victoria, its Panther platform stablemate, Mercury's Grand Marquis, eventually got the nod to get transformed into Ford's flagship 4-door, rear-wheel-drive performance sedan. While Mercury is often considered a Buick competitor, the modern Marauder was most directly aimed at the 1994-96 Chevrolet Impala SS. After the "Terminator" Mustang Cobra was upgraded to a supercharged powertrain for 2003, the SVT-developed naturally aspirated 4.6-liter DOHC V-8 was made available for use in the Marauder and the Mustang Mach 1, fitted with 4-valve cylinder heads from the Aviator SUV and rated at 302 horsepower. Ford's 4R70W four-speed automatic transmission sent power through an aluminum driveshaft to a 3.55:1 rear gearset, all borrowed from the Police Interceptor. This hot Mercury featured a true dual exhaust with chrome tips that exited at a unique rear fascia embossed with the Marauder name. The car also sat lower, with a performance-tuned suspension derived from the Crown Vic Handling and Performance package. Both its control-arm/coil spring front, and four-link/air-spring/live-axle rear suspensions touted stabilizer bars and Tokico shock absorbers. Large vented disc brakes rode inside 18-inch polished alloy rims wearing low-profile performance tires and classic Mercury "God-head" logo center caps.
