Reaching a bit further, we note that the back story of the Discovery 2, and this 'Rhino' in particular, has its parallels to the one in the African wilds. For at one time, the White Rhino faced extinction but battled back. Like so many '03-04 Discos (equipped with the highly problematic 4.6l engine), not too long ago this truck was in trouble. The engine was overheating and wheezing, the front driveshaft had come apart, and the the transfer box was shot! In the 5-plus years we've concentrated on the revitalization of late Disco 2's, these conditions were quite familiar to us so we knew exactly what was needed to bring the truck back to a vigorous new life. We started, as always, with the installation of one of our highly regarded RE-MANUFACTURED ENGINEs backed by a 1 YEAR GUARANTEE. These engines are completely reworked by an Atlanta-based performance engine builder with all new American-made TOP HAT LINERS, ARP Chromoly STUDS, and all new internal wear parts including a new oil pump, timing chain, cam, lifters, rings and bearings, as well as rebuilt cylinder heads. We cannot emphasize how important it is to have a NEW ENGINE, but don't take it just from us. Here's a strong comment by J.E. Robison of robisonservice.com, a widely respected Rover technical expert: "If you are looking at a 20034 Disco II be very careful around the motor. Ticks and raps are early signs of a block going bad, as is excess cooling system pressure. If you are looking at a 4.6 Discovery I suggest you assume the engine will need a $11-14k overhaul at some point, unless you are shown proof that the engine was already rebuilt with a new front cover and flanged cylinder liners". Along with the aforementioned upgrades, it also received a new HD driveshaft as well as all new coolant (hoses, pump, radiator, tank) and ignition (coils, wires, plugs, O2 sensors) components. BETTER THAN NEW? We think so! Of course all the basics were also addressed: NEW HEADLINER, BRAKES, and those wonderful 31.5" Nexen Pro8 TIRES in addition to a full vetting of all electrical functions (EVERYTHING MUST WORK!) an upgrade BLUETOOTH PHONE MEDIA RECEIVER, additional "WOOD" ACCENTS, custom LEATHER LEVER COVERS with color-matched French stitching, and a full cosmetic makeover. It must be noted that the bumpers and plastic widow trim are all in excellent, uncracked condition - and that's as rare as a Rhino in the wild!
